Thomas The Tank Engine first appeared in the stories of the Rev. W. V. Awdry in 1946. Awdry was reputed to have invented the stories to entertain his son Christopher when he was ill.

Thomas was never intended to have the star status that he now has; he was simply one of an ensemble of characters including Gordon, Percy, Henry, Oliver, Duck, Toby, James, Annie, Clarabelle and Edward.  Thomas’ cheeky personality made him popular and thus he was chosen as the focus of the TV series that bears his name.

Thomas lives on the Island of Sodor where he works for the Fat Controller’s railway.  As a tank engine his job originally was to shunt the other engines around in the yard, however he later was given his own branch line to run.

The TV series Thomas The Tank Engine was originally narrated by former Beatle Ringo Starr starting in 1984.  Later fellow Liverpudlian Michael Angelis took over.  In the US narration has been done by George Carlin and Alec Baldwin.

As well as appearing in books and on TV, Thomas has also appeared in the movie 'Thomas and the Magic Railroad' which starred Alec Baldwin and Peter Fonda.
