The Simpsons is one of the most consistently popular TV cartoon series on TV. Appealing to both children and adults and working on several different levels it is shown all over the world and has recently been made into a full length movie. It was first shown as a short segment in The Tracy Ullman Show in 1987, then began its run as a series in its own right in 1989.

The series is the story of a middle class American family, the Simpsons, consisting of the father Homer Simpson, who works at the local nuclear plant, Marge Simpson, a stay-at-home-mom, Bart Simpson their son who is at school, Lisa who is younger than Bart and is a child genius and baby Maggie who has never been heard to speak and has a dummy permanently in her mouth.

There is a large cast of other regular characters including Homer’s father Abraham, Montgomery Burns, Homer’s boss, Patty & Selma, Marge’s twin sisters, Apu the local shopkeeper, Krusty The Clown and Sideshow Bob.

The children’s favourite TV cartoon is the Itchy & Scratchy Show, a sort of ultra-violent version of Tom and Jerry.

The Simpson’s is also thought to be the show that has had the largest number of guest stars, including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Mick Jagger, Kelsey Grammer, Dustin Hoffman, Ringo Starr, Sting, Bob Hope, Tom Jones and Stephen Hawking amongst many others.
