The Pirates of the Caribbean series of films was actually based on a theme park ride at Disneyland which opened in 1967. The films based on the ride were not actually made until the first film ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’ was released in 2003. The film was an immediate success, starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann, Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner.

The success of the first film lead to two more Pirates of the Caribbean films being made; ‘Dead Man’s Chest’ and ‘At World’s End’, both of which starred the same cast, as well as introducing new characters including Davy Jones played by Bill Nighy.
