High School Musical is a made-for-TV Disney Channel Original Movie.

High School Musical is the story of Gabriella Montez, played by Vanessa Anne Hudgens (Thunderbirds) and Troy Bolton (Hairspray). A boy and girl from rival groups meet on a winter vacation and sing a duet in a karaoke competition. Back home Gabriella has to change school to East High School and Troy and Gabriella discover that they are now at school together. They fall in love and decide to try out for the school’s annual musical.

Troy is the star of the school basketball team while Gabriella highly academic and they are both intending to represent the school in competitions. Their friends try to discourage them from getting involved in the musical especially Sharpay Evans and her brother Ryan, who have always taken the lead roles in previous school shows. They attempt to trick Troy and Gabriella so that they miss the auditions but the trick fails and they get the lead roles. The show a huge success, Troy wins his basketball match and Gabriella also wins the scholastic decathlon.

The soundtrack to High School Musical is hugely popular. Popular songs from HSM are ‘Get'cha Head in the Game ’, ‘Stick to the Status Quo’, ‘Bop to the Top’ and ‘Breaking Free’, but the best known song is ‘We’re All In This Together’.

The popularity of High School Musical and High School Musical 2 mean that High School Musical 3 is now in production, which will not be made for TV but as a theatrical release for the cinema.
