Fireman Sam is a pre-school children’s series based around the firemen of Pontypandy, a Welsh town.  Originally made in Welsh and called Sam Tân it was remade into English narrated by John Alderton between 1985 and 1994.  New series have been made since 2003.

Sam, the hero of the story is a brave and sensible fire fighter who lives in Pontypandy.  He has a nephew James and a niece Sarah.  He is joined at Pontypandy fire station by Elvis Cridlington, who is a bit of a joker, loves cooking and rock’n’roll music.  The chief of Pontypandy Fire Station is Station Officer Steele, who is strict with all the firemen.  Penny Morris is the only female firefighter and also doubles as a mechanic.

Many of Fireman Sam’s call outs are caused by Norman Price, son of Pontypandy’s grocer Dilys Price.  Pontypandy also boasts an Italian restaurant run by Bella Lasagne, whose cat Rosa is also the cause of many of the emergencies that Sam and his crew attends.  Trevor Evans is the local bus driver and also works as an auxiliary fireman.  

The later series of Fireman Sam feature new characters including Tom Thomas, who flies a rescue helicopter and the Flood family whose daughter Mandy is friends with Norman, Sarah and James.

The final star of the show is Jupiter, the fire engine, who is of course crucial to every story.
