The return of Doctor Who to our screens has been a massive success; starting with Christopher Eccleston (the ninth actor to play Dr Who) ably assisted by Billie Piper as Rose Tyler and continuing with David Tennant as the 10th Doctor. He is currently assisted by Freema Agyeman as Medical Student Martha Jones, and in series 4 he will also have the company of Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. Donna first appeared in the Christmas 2006 edition of Doctor Who in ‘The Runaway Bride’.

Doctor Who was first shown in 1963 and has been popular from the outset, a comfortingly familiar feature of Saturday evenings for many a childhood. Travelling through time and space in his TARDIS, the show is every bit as popular now as it was in its original heyday in the 60’s and 70’s.

In the latest Doctor Who adventures we have seen the return of some of the Doctor’s best known alien foes, including the Daleks, Cybermen and The Master. We have also met some fantastic new aliens too – the Slitheen, the Ood, Autons, the Krillitane, the Sycorax and the terrifying Weeping Angels to name but a few.

As well as the 50 minutes episodes of Doctor Who, there have been two spin-off series. Torchwood, a more grown up series, stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, now working for the Torchwood organisation keeping a check on aliens arriving on earth. The Sarah Jane Adventures stars Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, former companion to The Doctor, who herself does battle with aliens which she combines with her career as a journalist.
